The American Dream, the Chinese Reality

  1. This is clearly an interesting juxtaposition and I think there are a lot of places to go with it. I also think the analysis needs to be taken a step further and begin to involve some of the more ephemeral characteristics of the two typologies. It may also help to get specific about the examples - pick specific houses to compare. Also the majority of the population of China doesn't live in houses that look like the one you drew. Maybe it would be interesting to compare apartment complexes in China to those in the US and see if you can pick out similar characteristics to the ones you've begun to identify.

  2. in addition to jared's comment, there are communities in the US (i went on a southside visit for human factors but i'm not sure if you guys did the same one... bc i took it a year ahead) where there is plenty of 'community' green space in front of the houses but it is never utilized, and instead the community space becomes this area where you feel like people in houses are watching you. in many ways, this seems the same as your 'closed society' perception.
